Troopers believe the Norristown native was driving west on US Route 22 in Perr County when his car left the roadway and hit a tree, catching fire.

The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a state police report.

Born in 2001, Ellis was a graduate of Methacton High School in Worcester Township, where he launched his athletic career, loved ones said.

"As a freshman, he proved himself to be an outstanding athlete, earning the prestigious title of All-American in wrestling," wrote GoFundMe organizer Percy Jones.

"But he didn't stop there; Tonee left his mark on the football field as well, reaching new heights as a senior when he became 1st team All-PAC Liberty (defensive lineman) with an impressive record of 68 tackles, 18 (tackles for a loss), 4.5 sacks, and four fumble recoveries."

After graduation, Ellis continued his studies at Alvernia University where he was part of the wrestling team's inaugural squad, Jones said. He excelled as a wrestler, notching 29 wins over 10 losses in the 197-pound weight class and helping get the program off the ground, said Alvernia athletics staff.

"Tonee was an outstanding young man that we are lucky to have gotten to work with, train with, and get to know over the last few years," said Alvernia wrestling head coach Kriss Bellanca on the school's website.

"Despite his quiet and soft-spoken demeanor, Tonee was a workhorse and a fighter. He will be greatly missed."

Ellis left Alvernia in the summer of 2022 to spend his senior year at the IUP, according to the school. He was enrolled as a biology major with a concentration in ecology, conservation, and evolution, IUP administrators said.

On GoFundMe, Jones said he wanted to help Ellis' grieving loved ones honor him with a fitting memorial service.

"Throughout his journey, Tonee remained a humble soul, never seeking help for himself but always being the first to extend a helping hand to others in need," he wrote.

The effort raised a staggering $15,000 in donations before Jones ended the campaign.

"His departure from us due to a tragic car accident has left us heartbroken, but we are determined to cherish the memory of this exceptional young man who made a profound impact on our lives."

Memorial plans have not been announced.
